Promoting Community Engagement through Student Fellowship Programs – this presentation used the Shi Center’s Fellowship program as a case study for ways to engage in positive community/student projects. The presentation used examples to demonstrate the impacts of students' career paths and how these opportunities promote strong town-gown relationships between our university and our community.
Charting a Path to Zero Waste at a Liberal Arts University: A Student-Led Model – This case study looked at the use of undergraduate students in the visioning, data collection, development, and writing of a university zero waste management plan.

Growing the Campus Landscape and Student Botanists Through Community Partnerships - This poster told the story of how Furman University leveraged longstanding community partnerships with two local organizations to benefit both student learning and the award-winning campus landscape.
Furman University’s Energy Efficiency Eco-Philanthropy Project – During the 2015-2016 academic year, the Environmental Community of Students (ECOS), a first-year engaged living program, received an $80,000 donation from a local donor to work with three local nonprofit organizations, a church, a soup kitchen and a homeless shelter, to help them improve their energy efficiency through renewable energy systems and system upgrades.
A Public Engagement Process to Create a Community Based Vision and Open Space Plan - During a three-week public engagement process, a team of faculty and students facilitated community-based public participation to create a vision and open space plan for a 27-acre vacant lot in a low-income neighborhood. This poster presented on both the process and the outcome.
Smart and Sustainable Presentations:
In this workshop a campus metabolism framework will be presented using Furman University as a case study, and then participants will work to map the inflows, transformations, and material outflows of various key campus resources (water, energy, food, and materials) and identify the key stakeholders within each system for their own university.
Furman University’s Shi Center for Sustainability hosts a Student Sustainability Fellows program that supports undergraduate students in sustainability research and internships on campus and in the surrounding community. The program is predicated on a strong cohort model with structured programming, training, and skills development around personal and professional growth and leadership that complements the sustainability internship/research experience. This session will describe the evolution and development of this student fellows program and share some best practices learned along the way.

Furman is a designated AASHE Hub and runs a summer workshop for other institutions to share best practices around integrating sustainability in the curriculum.
