Total percentage of students (graduate and undergraduate) that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary means of transportation:
86.60

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

A representative sample was randomly selected by the Assistant Director of Institutional Assessment and Research, with correction to ensure proportionate representation from all class years and genders. The transportation assessment was administered as part of Furman’s Sustainability Survey which has been administered to students, faculty, and staff, every third year since 2008. The survey was administered through the Qualtrics survey platform and distributed via an individual e-mail with one follow-up reminder email to unfinished respondents. Each participant was asked where they live and/or how far their residence is from campus. Then, each participant was asked how many trips by each mode of transportation were made in a typical week. Averages were compiled from these data to create an average for each mode of transportation.

The percentage of students that use each of the following modes as their primary means of transportation to get to and from campus::
Percentage (0-100)
Commute with only the driver in the vehicle (excluding motorcycles and scooters) 13
Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means 79
Vanpool or carpool 6.60
Take a campus shuttle or public transportation 0.90
Use a motorcycle, scooter or moped 0
