George Mason University (Mason) is a public institution of higher education within the state of Virginia. Therefore, it follows the procurement procedures and processes outlined by the state legislature. Mason chooses and works with vendors that share our commitment to sustainability. Within the Virginia 2.2-4311, the state requires that vendors must have within their contracts with the state the following: vendors must not discriminate because of race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, disability, or other basis. The vendor needs to advertise that it is an equal opportunity employer; must comply with federal, state, and local laws and federal immigration laws; required to comply with state laws; must be a drug free workplace; needs workers' compensation coverage. Within the act there are also preferences for vendors that are small businesses; businesses owned by women, minorities, and service disabled veterans; products with recycled content; products that have less toxicity; and Virginia based products and services.
