A brief description of how the assessment(s) were developed:
The survey was developed by the students in an Environmental Studies course, entitled “ES 196: Environmental Science and Society”, in the Spring of 2015. This class is a requirement for the Environmental Studies major and minor, yet usually also includes some students that are not potential major/minors. The class contains a laboratory component, and one of the labs that is done each semester is a “Survey lab.” The professor of the class, an Associate professor of the Environmental Studies department and Co-chair of the school’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, turned this lab assignment into the creation of the sustainability literacy assessment survey.
A brief description of how the assessment(s) were administered:
The assessment was administered by the students in the class mentioned above (those enrolled in the Spring 2015 sections of the Environmental Studies department’s “Environmental Science and Society”). Each student administered 16 paper surveys, with every student from the separate classes going to a different residential building on campus to ensure a representative sample of responses. The students administering the surveys went to these residential buildings and approached people about filling out the survey until they achieved 16 completed surveys each.
A brief summary of results from the assessment(s):
Of 288 students surveyed, over half (55%) were literate about Gettysburg College's sustainability practices. The survey included questions about values, such as desire to have sustainable practices that have not been initiated on campus, like a bike share program and completely green residence halls. Students indicated that they would like to see this happen.
