Gettysburg annually allocates dollars in the plant fund to invest in energy reducing projects, such as lighting retro-fits and HVAC replacements. When major renovations are planned the College is committed to designing with energy efficient systems.

The Finance and Administration division of the College oversees the departments at the College who are responsible for managing most of the College's carbon footprint. These departments include Facilities Services, Dining Services and Purchasing.

The College continues to replace lighting in building with energy efficient systems additionally bathroom renovations typically include low flow apparatus. The College utilized the Trane building control systems to help reduce energy usage and continues to monitor energy usage.

The College maintains an active record of all energy and water usage on campus and tracks this usage against prior year figures. The College strategy has been to continue to maintain and invest in the central power plant where over 85% of the campus heat is produced and over half the campus cooling is produced. One of the strategies is to maintain the underground steam and chilled water lines. To this end the college just competed and infrared study of the lines.

utilize vans to have more groups travelling together, eliminated freshman parking, offer free local public transit through freedom transit.

Measure the number of transportation miles and riders. The goal is to increase the ridership but reduce the overall number of miles driven by transporting large groups, thus reducing the departments carbon footprint and the overall cost of the program.

The college tracks the amount of waste at the dining center and the campus overall compares the usage to prior years. Additionally the College operates a give it up for good program with the local United Way that allows the students to donate unwanted materials at the end of the year to keep them out of the waste stream and gives the United Way an opportunity to raise funds, the college estimates the over tonnage sold each year and compares it to past years.
