According to our Sustainable Purchasing and Design Policy, when maintaining buildings and landscapes, Gonzaga shall manage pest problems through prevention and the use of environmentally friendly products. We may either adopt and implement an organic pest management policy and practices or adopt and implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy and practices using the least toxic pest control as a last resort. However, at the time of this report we do not have an IPM plan. We do follow the concepts of one. Plant Services manages pest problems through prevention and the use of environmentally friendly products. The use of herbicides and pesticides is on an as needed basis, rather than a preventative basis.


A brief summary of the institution’s approach to sustainable landscape management:

All landscaping renovations, constructions and maintenance performed by internal staff members or contractors providing landscaping services shall employ sustainable landscaping management techniques for design, construction and maintenance whenever practicable. his includes but is not limited to, integrated pest management, drip irrigation, and composting.


A brief description of how the institution protects and uses existing vegetation, uses native and ecologically appropriate plants, and controls and manages invasive species:

Plants are selected to minimize waste by choosing species for purchase that are appropriate to the microclimate. Native and drought-tolerant plants that require no or minimal watering once established are purchased in accordance with the Campus Landscape Master Plan.


A brief description of the institution’s landscape materials management and waste minimization policies and practices:

Plant services uses containers dispersed around campus when disposing of the yard waste they collect when maintaining Gonzaga’s grounds. In addition, landscape structures constructed of recycled content materials are encouraged.

Gonzaga participates in Spokane's "clean green" program, composting over 35 tons of debris annually. In addition, we prioritize sources of regionally generated plant mulch. This includes Ponderosa Pine needles from city parks, which are used as mulch on a portion of the universities landscaped areas.

We border the Spokane River and have reintroduced native species to the shoreline environment.

Snow is moved to drainage swales and/or percolates through campus green space.
