The Goucher Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council (GESAC) –composed of faculty, students, and staff – was formed, and in 2009, the council began work on the college's greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) inventory. In May 2011, GESAC worked to complete the college's first Climate Action Plan (CAP), which set a goal to reduce Goucher's GHG emissions 20 percent by 2020.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

2-4 students who are very active in sustainability efforts and who are engaged in co-curricular and academic sustainability clubs and departments are selected by members of senior staff to participate.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Students receive mentoring and feedback from the other faculty, staff, and administrators who are active participants in the advisory council. They are educated and empowered to take the information and initiatives from the council and operationalize them among the student body.


A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Financial support has been provided by generous contributions from alumni, as well as from special funds from the college's president's office. Additionally, money from the student green fee help to further the council's initiatives and programming.

In special-interest houses, students create distinct learning communities and live with a unified vision. They come together to share interests and passions, learn from and support one another, and educate the larger campus community. The Green House is dedicated to extending the environmentally sustainable visions of Goucher to on-campus housing. Students support one another to practice eco-friendly habits and engage in campus and community initiatives.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

The Division of Student Life has a rigorous hiring process to choose the Green House community assistant (CA), a student who lives in the house, functions as a peer adviser, and is the initial contact person to assist students with problems and concerns. The students who choose to live in the Green House self-select and designate this housing as their top choice for residential life.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

The community assistant who guides the Green House undergoes intensive training through the Division of Student Life to learn skills such a peer listening, conflict resolution, creating engaging student programming, etc.


A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (2nd program):

Students who live in the Green House are given modest funding to provide weekly/monthly educational and social activities that promote sustainability in the dorm, on campus, and in the community at large.
