Environmental Studies and Sustainability Program (ESSP)

Hampshire's interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and Sustainability Program (ESSP) includes environmental science; ecology; sustainable agriculture; conservation; technology and design; and sustainable communities.
Through the ESSP Program, Hampshire students develop a truly interdisciplinary, project-based course of studies that allows them to tackle--with the help of faculty and other students--complex, real-world issues. This is just the preparation that college graduates need to face the difficult environmental problems and challenges of today.
At Hampshire every student designs their own program of study (self-defined majors) and the students that go through the ESSP program encounter specific sustainability learning outcomes in courses (see below) and also develop their sustainability learning outcomes in conjunction with close consultation with their faculty advisors.

Students at Hampshire College, by design, must negotiate courses of study with a pair of faculty advisors. There are no pre-defined majors or degree programs, nor does the College require any specific courses for graduation. Students, however, use Hampshire programs like the Environmental Studies and Sustainability Program (ESSP) to guide their studies. The ESSP program (https://www.hampshire.edu/natural-science/environmental-studies-and-sustainability-program-essp) promotes sustainability learning outcomes at the programmatic and course levels. Over the past 3 years, I (Steve Roof), can affirm that 84 students have graduated following the ESSP guidelines and have completed one or more courses that have defined sustainability learning outcomes.
