Opened in 2016, the RW Kern Center is Hampshire's 17,000-square-foot living building, designed to operate net-zero energy and net-zero water by treating its own waste. Although it was designed and built to meet these stringent standards, including all materials having zero toxic "red list" content, it requires a year of net-zero energy and net-zero water operation before it is certified. Certification is expected in 2018.

Hampshire College's climate action plan makes a provision for high-performance buildings, with four key principles for newly-built space:
(1) A careful planning process,
(2) A "best in class" standard with regard to energy use,

(4) Inclusion of a renewable energy supply sufficient to meet the new building's energy needs.

Hampshire will strive to build new buildings to a "best in class" standard with regard to
energy use. This standard will place particular focus on building envelopes, user and
operator controls, and right-sized mechanicals.

This process will follow an integrative design process that sets aggressive energy budgets and manages the process to those energy budgets just as projects are managed to a financial budget.


A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:

New building projects will be driven by a commissioning agent or sustainability consultant to be hired at the outset of each project to represent the College. The agent or consultant will be charged with and empowered to achieve the performance standards necessary to achieve "best in class" status.

New building projects will involve students in a meaningful way in every phase of the project from planning through design, construction and commissioning

One of the most impressive aspects of Hampshire's profile is the lack of physical expansion the campus has undergone in the last two decades. With its focus on utilizing existing space, Hampshire has been able to limit the growth of its campus carbon footprint, energy consumption, water use, etc.

Only 4% of present campus square footage is less than 20 years old, and over 80% is from the initial build-out between 1970-74, or existing buildings we acquired that were built earlier.

Certified projects: The RW Kern Center is the eighteenth building in the world to be certified according to the most stringent green building standard on the planet, the Living Building Challenge. This requires net-zero energy and net-zero water to be verified after a year of successful operation. Certification date: 30 March 2018
