Hampshire College's purchasing policy, see attached, gives preference to disadvantaged businesses as well as sets a priority for sustainable purchases of all products.
By applying rigorous standards for fire safety, the College ensures that well-constructed furniture is purchased and that cheaply-made, single-year use furniture is not, reducing the amount of furniture send to landfills.
In addition, the third-party vendors that operate the College's dining commons and Bridge cafe as well as the campus copy center were chosen because they met rigorous standards for environmental sustainability.

Effective July 1, 2003, Hampshire College began purchasing 100% post-consumer content,
100% chlorine-free, recycled paper. This paper will be used campus-wide in all copiers and
office printers whenever possible. When not possible, for example, because of paper quality or prohibitive cost, paper that is 30% or higher post-consumer waste and 100% chlorine-free will be purchased.
Certain formal items, such as printed stationery and documents of the board of trustees, will continue to be printed on the paper the College has used historically in order to preserve consistency in the College’s external identity.

The College by policy buys only 100% post-consumer waste copier paper, except when operational needs require 30%.
