A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives, including how workers are engaged in monitoring and advising on health and safety programs:
The office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) provides training programs including hazmat awareness (lead, asbestos, PCBs), SPCC/spills, hazard communication, hazardous waste, personal protective equipment, confined spaces, respiratory protection, trenching, lockout/tagout, high lift, water damage/mold, ladders/working surfaces/fall protection, and blood-borne pathogen awareness.
All new employees are scheduled for job-appropriate training. All training programs are in person at time of hire, and then refreshers are offered as required by the specific program, or as needed based on compliance. These programs are flexible to account for new job hazards, different working conditions, and specific needs of employees.
Additionally, EH&S provides a basic health and safety presentation at the annual benefits fair and at new employee orientation. These presentations include basic fire safety, office safety, and office ergonomics. Work site ergonomic assessments are also offered at the employee's request.
Employees are encouraged to ask questions, and to contact EH&S at any time with any health and safety issues.
In addition to employee training, EH&S offers supplemental safety training to students working in areas of potential hazard (e.g. art, shop, and laboratories).
