A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

Each year the electronic waste recycling contract is sent out to bid. Required guidelines are that any company considered is certified by both the Federal Government and the state of Pennsylvania. Any company considered must demonstrate that they are in full compliance with a zero landscape policy.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

As old electronic equipment comes in to the Instructional and Informational Technology Services (IITS) they are inventoried and stored in a secured room. Once a month the electronics recycling company buys the equipment as scrap. If there is any residual value they are refurbished and sold on the open market. As part of the agreement, data drives and wires are destroyed by grinding into dust and the metal components are recovered and sold for scrap.
