In support of the campus Sustainable Development Policy (3.33), plantings at Haywood Community College’s main and satellite campuses shall be:

- ecologically appropriate and reflect our desire to be thoughtful stewards of the natural resources under our protection.
- regionally adapted and suitable for, landscape micro climates, pest pressures, and soils of the campus
composed of native plants grouped in biodiverse natural associations when possible
- educational, communicating a sense of place that helps students, faculty, staff, administrators, and guests understand the rich biodiversity and the limiting resources of our mountain region.
