Does the institution have policies and programs in place to make it accessible and affordable to low-income students?:
A brief description of the institution’s participation in federal TRIO programs:
Student Support Services provides opportunities for academic development and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
Hopkinsville Community College Upward Bound, a federally funded TRIO program, serves 65 high school students in Christian County, Kentucky to prepare for college.
To participate in the Upward Bound program, students will complete an application packet to determine eligibility. A student/parent admission interview is also conducted for eligible applicants.
During the school year, students regularly meet with staff who provide individual academic advising, monitor grades, and assist with tutoring. Students attend monthly high school and Saturday educational enrichment workshops that include college planning assistance, study skills, and cultural programs.
The summer program is a six-week learning experience while pursuing a variety of cultural and educational goals. Students are enrolled in classes throughout the day designed to encourage written and oral communication, foreign language, mathematics, and science skills. A cultural field trip (usually 5 days) and college visits are also part of the summer program.
High school seniors are assisted with college planning including college and financial aid application and entrance exam preparation. Seniors are given the opportunity to attend college visits and, during the academic year, can attend their own cultural/educational field trip. Job shadowing is available to those wishing to explore possible major and career opportunities. Additionally, senior bridge program participants may enroll in a college class at HCC in order to earn college credit prior to high school graduation.

The Ready to Work Program provides students with counseling, advising, and referrals that help them find the resources necessary to succeed in college.
The STEP UP program is a retention initiative for minority students who are experiencing academic difficulty with a 2.0 GPA or below. These students are monitored by the Office of Student Life with academic advising, tutoring assistance, and other referrals as needed.
Youth Workforce Connections is a training program that prepares participants for skilled jobs that are available in our community.

Work and Learn represents an expansion of services offered by the Ready to Work program which assists college-enrolled students. Work and Learn provides support to students preparing for the GED and to students needing additional remediation prior to enrolling in college-level classes.
