Humber’s Centre for Urban Ecology is the first and only facility to receive a Platinum Certification from Ontario EcoCentres. The Ontario EcoCentres certification demonstrates the centre’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmentally-balanced behaviour.

A brief description of how green cleaning is incorporated into cleaning contracts:

Sustainability (recycling, composting, green cleaning, etc.) was included in the most recent cleaning services contract RFP. Companies were evaluated on how they would develop and maintain green cleaning practices at the college. The supplementary Terms and Conditions also included a comprehensive section on environmental protection.

A brief description of the energy management or benchmarking program:

Humber’s energy management and benchmarking program is incorporated into the Integrated College Energy Master Plan (ICEMP or Plan). Started in 2015, the ICEMP will examine the long-term economic and environmental risks surrounding energy use at the College and re-envision Humber’s energy future. The Plan is being developed over several months by a team which includes operational staff, faculty members and students, mentored by a partner with global reach and expertise. The Plan aims to meet the following goals:

• Use at least 50% less energy by 2034
• Cause at least 30% less Greenhouse Gas emissions
• Create a campus-wide energy culture
• Ensure energy supply reliability
• Offer world-class academic courses addressing integrated energy, water and climate solutions
• Use Humber as a ‘living laboratory’ to develop competitive sustainability, energy & climate curricula
• Create a national and community role model with world-class energy performance
Humber’s current energy management program has achieved energy efficiency increase of 11%. The program includes:
• Energy goals incorporated and communicated through the 2014-2019 Humber Sustainability Plan, which has received support by senior management.
• Utility bills tracked on a monthly basis throughout the year. Established network of electrical sub meters
• Energy benchmarked internally year over year and compared to other regional colleges on an annual basis
• Monthly energy data reviewed by the energy efficiency manager
• Completed energy audit in 2014. Selected projects for implementation based on the audit’s results
