A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:

The HSU campus is situated in The Redwoods along the North Coast of California. Portions of the inner campus and much of the campus perimeter interfaces with an undisturbed Redwood Forest ecosytem. The promotion of wildlife habitat is achieved in several ways, including: allowing "snags" to remain in areas where pedestrian safety is not an issue and through the preservation of nests sites, including a committment to non-disturbance (i.e. - not allowing maintenance activities such as pruning to occur) when eggs or young are present. The University is also committed to the continual enhancement of salmonid habitats/riparian areas that exist in waters fed by tributaries that run through the campus. An invasive plant eradication program in these campus riparian areas is annually addressed with labor support coming from staff, volunteers and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
