HSU Digital Commons is a publishing model started in 2015 that promotes research, scholarly publications, and creative works from Humboldt State University and Humboldt State University Press. The model advances knowledge as a publisher of educational, scholarly, trade books, and creative works. HSU Library provides opportunities to publish and share research with the academic and global community, including: journal hosting, conference management, book publishing, editorial and peer-review tools, and scholar pages.

The library offers financial incentives to authors who publish with HSU Digital Commons by providing editing services at no cost and otherwise housing the literary work and making it available to a wide audience at no additional cost. In addition, The Affordable Learning Solutions Program (AL$) began in July, 2015. The program supports two areas:
1. Pays up to 4 faculty $1,500 each to bring an open access textbook to press. To apply they must meet with our publishing team and meet the criteria for open access.
2. Pays up to 50 faculty $300 each to attend workshops that help them to identify existing open access material that can be incorporated into existing classes.

The AL$ grant is given in one year cycles. So far HSU has been awarded funding for 2015-16 and 2016-17 years. For 2017-18 HSU have a new grant from the Chancellor’s Office created from Assembly Bill AB798 which will be used to assist with publishing open access textbooks. Humboldt Digital Scholar is a repository which supports the open access publishing model. As such, it is a fundamental step in transforming scholarly communication and providing more comprehensive access to research for scholars everywhere. Through this resource, the Library provides editing assistance and generally assists scholars with getting their work out to the public. This resource was stared in 2004.
