A brief description of how green cleaning is incorporated into cleaning contracts:

As standard operating procedure at HSU, all janitorial entities use green cleaning products. This statement is published on The Green Scene operations webpage http://www2.humboldt.edu/green/features/operations.php: "The HSU janitorial staff uses Green Seal Certified and non-toxic, biodegradable products for cleaning buildings."
Read on for more detail.

There are three janitorial entities that clean buildings at HSU. One of them is the main Custodial Dept. housed under Facilities Management which utilizes, as standard operating procedure, green product for cleaning everything they manage except restroom areas. The cleaning of restrooms requires use of a disinfectant that is not a certified green product. The main Custodial Dept. is currently in the process of attending training to get certified as CIMS-GB. Facilities Custodial staff cleans a total area equal to 896,018 and the area cleaned with green cleaning products (area excluding restrooms) is 860,886 square feet. This means that 96% of all the space they clean is maintained with green cleaning products.

The second janitorial entity, Restif, is hired as a third party by an auxiliary department, the University Center. They clean the first floor of Nelson Hall and several areas within the University Center Building (including the Depot, the Kate Buchanan Room, the Karshner Lounge, the South Lounge, Associated Student Areas, and all restrooms). Similarly to Custodial Staff within Facilities Management, Restif uses a product called Suprox that is Green Certified in all areas except for restrooms. Restroom areas require use of a non-certified disinfectant. Restif cleans a total area of 38,962 sq ft, with 36,457 sq ft of that maintained with green cleaning products as standard operating procedure This means that 94% of all space they clean is maintained with green cleaning products.

The third janitorial entity on campus is an auxiliary department, Housing and Residence Life. They clean approximately 83,000 square feet on a regular basis, and only 11,000 of that is not regularly cleaned with green cleaning product as standard operating procedure. This 11,000 square feet represents bathroom areas, which require use of a non-green certified cleaning product called Tilex, so this area has been subtracted from the total. This means that 86% of the total area cleaned by Housing is cleaned with certified green cleaning product.

Of the institution's uncertified building space, what percentage of floor area is maintained in accordance with an energy management or benchmarking program? (0-100):
13

A brief description of the energy management or benchmarking program:

A handful of buildings on the Humboldt State University campus have undergone recent Monitoring based commissioning (MBCx), which is a process of evaluating energy systems, monitoring mechanical and electrical loads, recommending energy saving measures, and achieving energy savings. These buildings include: Science D and Science E, Founders Hall, Gist Hall, Wildlife & Fisheries, and Behavioral & Social Sciences. One crucial step in MBCx projects is benchmarking, and so all buildings where this program has been deployed are included here. The square footage summed for each included building is 258,683 sq ft.

Of the institution's uncertified building space, what percentage of floor area is maintained in accordance with a water management or benchmarking program? (0-100):
86.70

A brief description of the water management or benchmarking program:

In 2014, Facilities Management began a water reduction plan most buildings within main campus. Buildings/areas within the auxiliary of Housing & Residence Life did not participate in the program, and these spaces account for the 13.3% of space not maintained with the water management plan as cited above. (267,112 square feet was subtracted from the total campus square footage of 1,995,999 square feet).
The plan includes the following short-term strategies:
• install aerators at sink faucets
• install low flow showerheads at Kinesiology & Athletics building, Recreation & Wellness Center, Behavioral & Social Sciences building, Theatre Arts and Forestry buildings
• retrofit existing flushometers to reduce required water for flushing
• ensure all recirculation pumps are working properly and efficiently
• conduct domestic and irrigation water system leak detection survey
• implement campus education program
• manually reduce water use by eliminating pressure washing in advance of major campus events
• replace water-cooled condensing unit at Forestry with air-cooled unit
The plan includes the following long-term strategies:
• repair domestic & irrigation water system leaks per survey findings
• install building & system level metering
• install soil moisture controlled irrigation system controllers including data line for programming
• install low flow fixtures (i.e. toilets, urinals, etc)
• install water storage system for greenhouse watering
