A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

Research provided through ISUReD was utilized for baseline FY 15 (July 1, 2014 thru June 30, 2015) as the base research inventory. The Research Symposium guidebooks for FY 15 and FY 16 were utilized to identify sustainability research utilizing the principals of the Earth Charter as the criteria.


A brief description of notable accomplishments during the previous three years by faculty and/or staff engaged in sustainability research:

Illinois State has developed several inter-disciplinary centers to bring together research from typically disparate departments. Some of these centers are focused on specific issues, for instance the formation of a Center for Water is a direct result of research conducted by Dr. Catherine O'Reilly ("Illinois State University’s Catherine O’Reilly is part of a global study that found climate change is rapidly warming lakes around the world, threatening freshwater supplies and ecosystems."- Press Release, December 2015), and Dr. Joan Brehm's sociology research connecting residential practices to water quality. Water research from other departments was identified and the practitioners came together to initiate the newly forming Center.

A broader program was developed as a result of research in Economics, Politics and Government and Sociology. ISU's Stevenson Center is a top 5 program in the nation for Peace Corps. An alumni of the program stated, "Being a Master’s International student in the Stevenson Center allowed me to study development on three continents while rendering three years of national service (nine months of AmeriCorps, 27 months of Peace Corps) in pursuit of my degree. Working with community leaders, I have facilitated trainings in improved agricultural techniques such as composting, grafting, and mulching. When these techniques are adopted by farmers and gardeners, the community builds the capacity to meet its food security needs.”

ISUReD (open access repository), and the annual Research Symposium descriptions (http://grad.illinoisstate.edu/symposium/). A select collection of research that reflects the principals of the Earth Charter are included on the Office of Sustainability's web-site.
