The name of the campaign(s):
Bring Your Own Mug Coffee Discount

A brief description of the campaign(s):

ISU Dining conducts an annual awareness campaign to market to customers the ability to bring a clean, reusable tumbler or cup and receive a $0.35 discount on a beverage purchase at all of their retail locations. This yearly promotion includes posting signs advertising the program in the majority of their retail facilities. In addition, ISU Dining sells a variety of reusable beverage containers in many of their stores. This includes a special “ISU Dining” tumbler, which is sold at cost in an effort to promote sustainable practices. In total, 1,781 reusable coffee mugs were sold from the spring of 2007 to the spring of 2010. Finally, the number of disposable cups diverted from the waste stream is made available to students and the public as part of Iowa State’s Sustainability Annual Report.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

From May 1st, 2011-April 30th, 2012 ISU Dining recorded 43,056 beverages purchased with a reusable tumbler at the discounted price, equaling the number of disposable cups diverted from the waste stream during that year. This is an increase from the 32,850 disposable coffee cups kept out of the waste stream in 2010-2011. As a comparison, in 2008-2009 ISU Dining used 500,000 disposable coffee cups.
