A brief description of the technology used:
Iowa State employs a system called Metasys by Johnson Controls Company, which consists of over 90,000 system points (inputs and outputs). These are temperature sensors or controlled devices used to monitor and operate fans, pumps, dampers, valves, doors, or lights. Metasys is connected to over 80 campus buildings, and it controls and monitors approximately 288 air handlers, 88 heating systems, 74 cooling systems, 74 fire panels, 24 lighting systems, and 15 security systems. One of the program functions is to turn off equipment when buildings are not occupied. Most major buildings have an energy plan for controlling HVAC and lighting equipment for occupied and unoccupied operations.
