The University Committee on Diversity (UCD) is charged with "assess[ing] the effectiveness of diversity efforts on campus, identify[ing] gaps in university diversity policies and efforts, develop[ing] new policies and initiatives as necessary, and ensure[ing] that units across the university are meeting diversity objectives." The UCD meets several times each semester. Among the committee's responsibilities is the review of diversity reports submitted by colleges and units. In addition, the UCD is responsible for reviewing applications for the Diversity Grants Program administered by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost. The committee also supports diversity-related events and activities that occur across the university.

A brief description of the diversity office:

Iowa State’s Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost has a Chief Diversity Officer as well as an Equity and Diversity Coordinator. These roles are tasked with chairing the University Committee on Diversity (formerly the Advisory Committee on Diversity Programming and Coordination), an advisory committee on diversity programming and issues at Iowa State. The group also searches for opportunities to get faculty more involved in existing diversity initiatives, such as the annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE). Finally, this staff core supports the campus-wide efforts to attract a diverse pool of applicants for faculty and staff positions.

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:

The ISU Equity and Diversity Coordinator assists the Chief Diversity Officer in all aspects of diversity planning and administration, and has a significant role on the university Work/Life Committee and with the ADVANCE Programs. The goal of the ISU ADVANCE Program is to investigate the effectiveness of a multilevel collaborative effort to produce institutional transformation that results in the full participation of women faculty in science, technology, engineering and math fields in the university. The coordinator also assists with the recruitment and retention of minority faculty; works with the African-American, Asian, Latino/a and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) groups on campus; participates in the University Committee on Diversity and the University Committee on Women; and coordinates the annual Emerging Leaders Academy.
