The University Life Survey assesses the living/working/learning environment at Iowa State University. The survey is administered by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost. The overall goal of the University Life Survey is to improve the quality of university life for everyone at Iowa State University.

Respondents are asked specific questions about the recruitment of students, faculty and staff as well as university-wide efforts to support a positive learning and working environment. All respondents are asked to prioritize sub goals, with one of the options being to expand/nurture diversity. Respondents were also asked to indicate their level of agreement with the following statements:

Iowa State University Increases the Diversity of People, Ideas, and Cultures
Iowa State University Nurtures an Environment in Which Diversity Can Thrive

In the last survey diversity was identified as the number one university priority by underrepresented minorities and graduate students and the number four priority overall.

A brief description of how the results of the assessment(s) are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:

Every two years, respondents share insights that will improve university policies and direct future institutional practices. Insights gained from the University Life Survey allow measurment on progress toward goals in the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan. Bi-annually, the President of Iowa State University reports survey results to the Board of Regents and uses participant feedback to assess needs and to implement future best practices.
