A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (1st program):

Eco Reps meet once a week and at each meeting they are introduced to a new environmental topic. They help plan activities on campus and brainstorm actions to be taken in the residence halls each semester. Eco Reps are also trained to be CRT crew members (Compost, Recycling, Trash) in our campus food court and at other special events throughout the year, such as Food Frenzy. The CRT crews wear a name badge and "guard" the trash receptacles while encouraging students to sort through their waste and compost as carefully as possible. Through proper signage and educational explanations, we reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and increase the amount going to recycle and compost bins.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

There is a brief application to fill out at first. All students are invited to apply but only a select group of about 25 students are selected. Students do not have to be studying environmental issues but should have a deep concern for the environment and how to improve sustainable behavior on campus.

Eco-Reps are trained in facilities know-how of compost, recycling, and trash (CRT) and gain knowledge through engaging students and faculty in environmental and sustainability issues.

The group is coordinated by a senior intern for the Resource and Environmental Management Program along with another upperclassman who helps coordinate the program. The overall Eco Rep staff is supervised by Mark Darling, the Sustainability Programs Coordinator for Ithaca College. The program receives a budget in order to pay student workers an hourly wage of $7.25. Any other projects the group takes on must be paid for through self fundraising events such as bottle and can collections.
