Resident Advisors introduced sustainability at first of year floor meetings. They review the recycling programs and procedures for residents and tell students how to participate in other sustainability initiatives, including that each student with a meal plan receives a free reusable mug from Dining Services that they can use at a discount in campus dining halls. In addition, resident advisors are asked to carry their reusable water bottle and encourage students to drink tap water instead of using disposable water bottles. Last, Resident Advisors make students aware of upcoming sustainability programs and events on campus.

The university uses an award-winning new student publication to walk students through their preparation for their first semester at JMU, called the "One Book." Vital programs and procedures are facilitated through the One Book, including emergency contact information, access codes, packing to live on campus, placement exams, etc. One page of the One Book is titled "Bleed Purple, Live Green" and details how students can get involved in JMU's culture of sustainability, from low waste practices like public transit options to green facilities on campus to academic offerings and extracurricular activities focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship.
