Does the institution have at least one formal sustainability partnership with the local community that meets the criteria as “supportive”?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s supportive sustainability partnership(s) with the local community:

In June 2013, JCCC hosted a compost workshop for Kansas State University and Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) to share knowledge and learn best practices for promoting compost operations on an institutional and municipal level. Our own in-vessel compost system was a case for study.

Does the institution have at least one formal sustainability partnership with the local community that meets the criteria as “collaborative”?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution's collaborative sustainability partnership(s):

The college is a member of Mid-America Regional Council's Green Jobs Task Force, a Kansas City Metro-wide group focus on green workforce development and growing the demand for green jobs. We also regularly meet with and present to other business and government entities about each of our sustainability efforts to pursue collaboration and knowledge sharing. The Task Force also specifically seeks to address social and economic sustainability in addition to environmental concerns by creating job opportunities for disadvantaged groups in the Kansas City Metro area. This has been pursued in a number of ways including blighted building deconstruction (including worker training programs), energy and water efficiency work focusing on older buildings in the city's core, and worker training programs in green career opportunities. JCCC had an employee representative on the Task Force since 2011.

Our Sustainable Hospitality Internship Program, discussed in more detail elsewhere, is also a spin-off of the Task Force's efforts. It has trained JCCC Hospitality Management students in sustainability skill sets to pair with their culinary training by helping Kansas City independent restaurants to implement sustainability improvements to their operations.

Does the institution have at least one formal sustainability partnership with the local community that meets the criteria as “transformative”?:
No

A brief description of the institution's transformative sustainability partnership(s) with the local community:
---

A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with distant (i.e. non-local) communities:

The college has had a long-standing relationship with the community of Las Pintas, Guadalajara, Mexico. On an annual basis teams from nursing and dental programs at the college travel to Las Pintas and provide medical and dental screenings, preventative health care classes, educational programs for parents, and assistance with construction projects. More recently, a solar team has visited Las Pintas to install solar thermal water heaters on residences, teaching recipients how to build the technology themselves so they can in turn show their neighbors and expand the impact.
