Sustainable Classroom Building Development

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

In pursuit of constructing a small classroom building on campus that could also serve as a "living, learning lab" for what cutting edge, green buildings can be, JCCC partnered with Studio 804 from the University of Kansas (KU). Studio 804 is a capstone course in KU's Master of Architecture program in which students (with some, but not much assistance from contractors) design and physically construct an entire building over one academic year. Studio 804 is organized as a not-for-profit so the building was acquired for well below market value, given it's extensive features. This project also provided the KU students with an invaluable, real-world experience of working with a client to complete an entire building from start to finish. This partnership between two higher-education institutions resulted in one of the flagship buildings on the JCCC campus and one of only ten LEED Platinum certified buildings in the state of Kansas.
