The project works with the community center El Centro Integral Comunitario to improve the quality of life for those in the Santa Rosa community in Guadalajara, Mexico. JCCC faculty and staff plan offerings (both services and educational opportunities for area families) in conjunction with the Center directors.
Since 1998, specific academic programs have supported this partnership. Dental hygiene and nursing students provide medical screenings and other preventative care. (http://www.jccc.edu/internationaleducation/international-service-learning/mexico.html)
The Las Pintas Solar Experience (http://www.jccc.edu/sustainability/academics-for-sustainability/service-community-learning.html) is a competitive program that's open to all applicants regardless of major. Since 2011, students have participated in workshops to learn the techniques required to install solar thermal hot water systems. These systems improve quality of life, provide hot water at a lower cost than propane or wood-fired heaters, and recipients teach their neighbors how to repeat the process on their own homes. Students who are chosen to participate receive funding support from the Student Sustainability Committee. Under the direction of faculty, students work in the teams established at JCCC to make required purchases in-country, install and test the heaters, and teach someone from each family how to replicate the process for themselves and their neighbors. Each recipient of a heater is required to teach at least three others how to build their own.
