A brief description of how the assessment was developed:
The 2011 Sustainability Assessment was developed by a business department professor and a business student. The questions were developed during the course of researching materials for the sustainability portion of the 2011 freshmen orientation. Questions were focused on basic sustainability principles and recycling.
A brief description of how the assessment was administered:
The quiz was developed in such a way that students would be quizzed on their current knowledge of sustainability before listening to the presentation. Then, students were given a 30 minute presentation on sustainability and recycling, which contained the correct answers to the questions that they had just seen on the quiz.
Finally, 45 days later, the same group of students was presented with the same set of questions as a followup. The goal was to obtain a measurement of how much the students had learned from the presentation.
Students were given 5 minutes to take the 5-question quiz. Various faculty members were scattered throughout the student body to minimize the chance of students sharing answers during the assessment. Assessments were collected prior to the presentation and the results were tabulated by administrators.
A brief summary of results from the assessment:
The first assessment resulted in an average student score of 3.60/5.00 (72%).
The second assessment, which occurred after the 30-minute sustainability presentation, resulted in an average score of 4.48/5.00 (90%). We were quite pleased with the 18% increase in student understanding.
