4.9 Environmental Protection: "Insect and disease outbreaks will be assessed if and when they arise, and the method of control will be determined by the Off Campus Properties Committee. The proximity of homes and cottages to the forest will obviously be considered in these decisions."

A brief summary of the institution’s approach to sustainable landscape management:

In the LRCA protected area Lakehead manages the land to their standards by physical plant. In the LEED managed area in Orillia, Lakehead manages the land to the LEED Platinum standards by physical plant. The Jack Haggerty forest is managed by the Department of Natural Resource Management.


A brief description of how the institution protects and uses existing vegetation, uses native and ecologically appropriate plants, and controls and manages invasive species:

Lakehead refers to the department of Natural Resource Management regarding the use of native vegetation on campus. In the case of the Orillia campus, using native and ecologically appropriate plants is part of adhering to LEED standards.


A brief description of the institution’s landscape materials management and waste minimization policies and practices:

There is no formal landscape material management and waste minimization policy.


A brief description of the institution’s organic soils management practices:

Lakehead has no formal organic soils management practices outside of those implemented via the LRCA.


A brief description of the institution’s use of environmentally preferable materials in landscaping and grounds management:

Hugh Briggs noted that Physical Plant uses environmentally preferable materials in landscaping and grounds management where possible. Lakehead University's Procurement policy notes in section 9. "The University will endeavor to support environmentally positive initiatives. Consideration will be given to products that are proven to have less negative impact on the environment than other products of the same or similar quality. Development of commodity specifications for construction tenders valued over $10,000 should reference environmental considerations such as reduction, re-use and recycling measures. The University will always consider environmentally superior product choices in its procurement decision".

Hugh Briggs couldn't put any sort of quantitative figure to the amount of environmentally preferable materials being used compared to non-environmentally preferable.


A brief description of how the institution restores and/or maintains the integrity of the natural hydrology of the campus:

The role of maintaining the integrity of the natural hydrology of campus falls to Physical Plant. Lakehead University's Thunder Bay campus has the McIntyre River which was dammed to form Lake Tamblyn in the 1970's. Currently Lakehead University has no management system for maintaining the watershed; however, the University does adhere to several external policies created by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE), the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource (MNR) and the Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority. The Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority has regulations regarding the distances from the McIntyre River which Lakehead University can build within.


A brief description of how the institution reduces the environmental impacts of snow and ice removal (if applicable):

Lakehead has transitioned to using more sand than salt because sand is more environmentally friendly, cheaper and more effective in heavy snowfalls.


A brief description of any certified and/or protected areas:

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority manages 15.25 hectares on campus/ The LRCA gets its authority through the Conservation Authorities Act of 1946 which is provincial legislation.
