Although we do not have an official written policy, current practice by Facility Services is to manage insects and pests according to the tiered monitor/prevent/control structure of the IPM plan.


A brief summary of the institution’s approach to sustainable landscape management:

The grounds department at Lawrence University uses plants that don’t use a lot of water, attempts to transplant things around campus instead of buying more. They try to use the least amount of chemicals possible. Therefore, there are no chemicals between the tennis courts and the Warch Campus Center, which includes most of the campus.


A brief description of how the institution protects and uses existing vegetation, uses native and ecologically appropriate plants, and controls and manages invasive species:

No official policy, but Facility Services uses native plants regularly for landscaping because they require less water. In addition, student groups have organized volunteer events to plant native species and pull invasive species. Woodchucks are mentally relocated occasionally.


A brief description of the institution’s landscape materials management and waste minimization policies and practices:

Facility Services uses only mulching lawnmowers, so grass clippings are immediately returned to the soil. All other organic waste from groundskeeping operations (branches, leaves, weeds, etc) are taken to an on-site compost pile.


A brief description of the institution’s organic soils management practices:

by using mulching mowers and composting on campus we do not need to add exogenous fertilizers to turf or managed garden spaces.


A brief description of the institution’s use of environmentally preferable materials in landscaping and grounds management:

In landscaping, the grounds crew at Lawrence University uses materials with less chemicals like soap and water, tobasco sauce. hot pepper spray, and liquid mint.

We have hired a landscape architect to oversee all landscaping on campus. All projects are reviewed by the City of Appleton.

We use brushes to remove much of the snow in lieu of excessive salt or chemical melt.
