A brief description of when and why the building energy consumption baseline was adopted:

2013 was chosen as the energy consumption baseline because it reflects the first year using a new reporting methodology for energy consumption and is data submitted to the Ministry of Energy. Using this baseline allows benchmarking against other similar institutions.


A brief description of any building temperature standards employed by the institution:

Loyalist conforms to the ASHREA standard for building temperature and has made a decision to keep buildings on the Wallbridge-Loyalist campus at 25-26°C instead of 20-21°C to reduce energy consumption during the summer months. In spring and fall, the College manages the boilers to run on reduced fire. Occupancy schedules are used within the building automation system to regulate temperatures on the Wallbridge-Loyalist campus. Variable speed drives have been set to run at lower speeds during times of low occupancy and start times for fans are delayed until there is occupancy.


A brief description of any light emitting diode (LED) lighting employed by the institution:

LED lighting retrofits have been completed for the Wilkinson Lecture Theatre, library, dining hall, Student Centre, emergency lights, and in select change rooms, hallways and exterior light fixtures. The Facilities Services department follows a policy to replace any burnt light bulb with LED where fixtures allow.

Recent and ongoing projects include the installation of building automation controls, hot water tank conversions, roofing upgrades, removal of redundant laser printers, and extensive lighting retrofits across campus. In July 2014, the College completed an Energy Conservation & Demand Management plan to guide our efforts over the next 5 years. It establishes goals and objectives for conserving and otherwise reducing energy consumption. The action items outlined in the Plan will help us:
• Better understand the College’s current energy footprint;
• Educate the campus community (students, staff and faculty) about the role they play and seek their involvement and ideas;
• Develop energy-related strategies, policies and procedures; and
• Plan for energy cost containment.

As per Ministry guidelines, the gross floor area reported excludes space that is not owned by the College and for space for which we do not pay utilities. Therefore, a number of buildings are not included in the calculation of gross square footage (i.e. Campus Living Centres, the Sports Dome and Certification Services).
