A brief description of the plan(s) to advance sustainability in Energy:

Loyalist College completed an Energy Conservation & Demand Management Plan in 2014. It was developed collaboratively by Loyalist College staff to guide the development of specific action items that will help us:
• Better understand the College’s current energy footprint;
• Educate the campus community (students, staff and faculty) about the role they play and seek their involvement and ideas;
• Develop energy-related strategies, policies and procedures; and
• Plan for energy cost containment.

The measurable objectives, strategies and timeframes included in the Energy plan(s):

The Plan calls for the establishment of a formal energy committee or working group responsible for conducting a benchmarking exercise and lifecycle cost analysis and using its results to develop SMART goals by the end of Q4 2014. Furthermore, additional action items will be developed and existing ones updated as appropriate based on results of an energy audit performed in May 2014 (results were not yet available at the time of developing the plan). The plan outlines 44 action items under the following categories: management and organizational, behavioural, and technical.

A brief description of the plan(s) to advance sustainability in Health, Wellbeing and Work:

For several years, Loyalist College has had in place a full-time Mind & Wellness Practitioner to promote health and wellbeing on campus, with a focus on mental health. In addition, the College has two full time mental health counselors for students that offer mental health counseling and support, and help students define their goals, tap into their own strengths and build opportunities for positive change. They can also refer students to additional or specialized community resources when needed to support a student’s wellness. Students are able to access both Counseling and Mind & Wellness Services for free.
The plan includes the following elements:
• Information to help students forge connections between social experiences and academic success
• Information on safe substance/alcohol use, healthy relationships, gender and sexualized violence
• Health and wellness promotion including Health Awareness Markets
• Organizing and facilitating events such as Pink Shirt Day (anti-bullying), Defeat Depression, etc.
• Teaching students stress management and relaxation techniques (e.g. Therapy Dogs, free student yoga, etc.).

The College also has an Employee Assistance Program which offers employees free access to confidential, professional counseling.

Accessibility is also key to the health and well-being of the College community and Loyalist has created a Multi-Year Accessibility Plan to ensure full and equal participation of people with disabilities at the College. The plan is found here: http://www.loyalistcollege.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/LoyalistCollegeMulti-YearAccessibilityPlan-FinalV1.pdf

The measurable objectives, strategies and timeframes included in the Health, Wellbeing and Work plan(s):

With respect to one-on-one work, the Mind & Wellness Practitioner and the campus mental health counselors track how many students access their services, for what purpose, who/what students are referred to, what support they are provided and how many times they meet with them. With regard to strategy, the department uses student evaluations to assess program performance and refine it as necessary. For workshops and campus-wide initiatives, students are asked to complete evaluations which provide information on their effectiveness, usefulness, and relevance for students. Changes are then made based on student feedback.

The institution’s definition of sustainability:

Loyalist College follows the three-pillar approach to sustainability: economic, environmental and socio-cultural. We recognize that we live in a world with environmental limits and we all must take action to live within them. At Loyalist, the College community can work together to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and prevent harm to our local environment. Through education, we can learn about what makes a healthy, vibrant and inclusive community and the role we play in shaping it. We believe that individual efforts really do make a difference and the legacy we leave behind is up to us.

Does the institution’s strategic plan or equivalent guiding document include sustainability at a high level?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution’s strategic plan or equivalent guiding document addresses sustainability:

“Sustainability and Capacity-Building” is one of 3 strategic directions outlined in Loyalist’s 2009-2014 Strategic Plan. The Plan states: "We are committed to the prudent and creative management of our human, economic and environmental resources ensuring that learners today and tomorrow receive the optimal benefit from all possible resources."

The 2020 Plan was not yet approved at the time of submitting this report; however, the draft Plan commits the College to "Continue to develop and apply responsible solutions with respect to all College programs, operations and facilities through the implementation of a comprehensive and integrated Sustainability Plan."
