A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

Upper class residents may opt to live in the Global Village Community in Miller Hall, composed of areas on fourth and fifth floor. Global Village is a living-learning community for all students who want to gain a greater understanding of global issues while exploring and celebrating difference and diversity. There are regular discussions and activities held by the Global Village that focus on increasing cultural competency.
Paideia I, a required course for all first year students, draws on European, African, Asian, and American traditions so that students will be introduced to multiple perspectives. Paideia II, a required senior course, also has several options that focus on cultural competency, such as Schooling in Jamaica and the US: Cross-Cultural Comparisons in Contemporary Education. Also, in many courses taught at Luther, students now have the opportunity to fill out the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) under the instruction of Wintlett Browne, to assess their cultural competency, understand why and how they currently score, and what they can do to improve their cultural competency.
