PA-7: Support for Future Faculty Diversity

The Luther College Diversity Employment Guidelines lay down a plan for increasing and promoting diversity in higher education faculty. Luther College has a diversity liaison who is a resource for search committees and produces an annual report on faculty hiring, including information on the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of positions covered under these guidelines. Associated Colleges of the Midwest. Associated Colleges of the Midwest is a consortium of 14 private liberal arts colleges, primarily in the Midwestern United States. The 14 colleges are located in five states. The ACM was established in 1958 and is headquartered in Chicago.

ACM Committee on Minority Concerns

The ACM Committee on Minority Concerns has been constituted by the Advisory Board of Deans so that the consortium can assist individual campuses in their efforts to provide a supportive environment for individuals from groups that are underrepresented in higher education. The committee recommends collaborative initiatives that assist member campuses in providing an environment and climate that attracts and retains domestic ethnic minority students, faculty, and staff.

As a member of the ACM program, Luther College has access to Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows.

With support from the Mellon Foundation, the ACM-Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowships place new PhDs in two-year teaching and research residencies on campuses of the ACM member colleges. The program combines campus-based mentoring with a consortial orientation and workshops to introduce Fellows to the challenges and rewards of teaching, scholarship, and professional development in the residential liberal arts college.

Through ongoing committees like the Committee on Minority Concerns and the Committee on the Status of Women, ACM colleagues come together to address pressing campus issues.

Consortium for Faculty Diversity

Luther College is a member of the Consortium for Faculty Diversity (CFD). The Consortium is committed to increasing the diversity of students, faculty members and curricular offerings at liberal arts colleges with a particular focus on enhancing the diversity of faculty members and of applicants for faculty positions. The Consortium was founded as an association of liberal arts colleges committed to strengthening the ethnic diversity of students and of faculty members at liberal arts colleges. The early goals of the Consortium with regard to faculty diversity included encouraging U.S. citizens who are members of under-represented minority groups to complete their graduate programs and to consider faculty employment in liberal arts colleges. Appointments to the fellowships are made by the member institutions according to local needs and local program guidelines under the general framework for dissertation fellowships and post-doctoral fellowships described by the Consortium.
