Sustainability research focuses on a key principle of sustainability (such as social equity or environmental stewardship); addresses a sustainability challenge (such as climate change or poverty); or furthers our understanding of the interconnectedness of societal and environmental challenges.
Sustainability research at Macalester College seeks to advance theoretical or applied knowledge in support of economic prosperity, social well-being, and ecological health through integration of techniques, methods and modes of inquiry from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The Sustainability Advisory Committee Education in the Classroom Task Force developed a definition of sustainability research. Then, a student worker read through the faculty curriculum vitae's of the Environmental Studies Coordinating Committee to identify faculty whose research fit the definition.
