A spreadsheet containing all the list of active courses for fall 2013 term was provided by Scheduling Office. The courses were filtered by departments and distributed to corresponding Chairs. Instructions were provided to departmental Chairs for them to review each course under their remit and first, confirm that course was offered in the last three years, second, identify if the course was sustainability-focused or sustainability-related, and if so, specify which type(s) of sustainability lens are integrated into the course: environment, society, and/or economy.
Following that process, all syllabi for the courses initially identified by departmental Chairs were examined by the Office of Sustainability to determine whether or not a course could be classified as a sustainability course or a course that includes sustainability. Courses that clearly identified sustainability focus, course content including sustainability, and/or a sustainability module or learning outcomes were then compiled into the MacEwan University Sustainability Curriculum Assessment 2012-13. The following definitions were used to guide the classification and inventory process:
Sustainability courses are courses in which the primary and explicit focus is on sustainability and/or on understanding or solving one or more major sustainability challenge.
Courses that include sustainability are primarily focused on topics other than sustainability, but incorporate a unit or module on sustainability or a sustainability challenge, include one or more sustainability-focused activities, or integrate sustainability issues throughout the course.
