Does the institution advocate for national, state/provincial, or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The Office of Sustainability is a member of the Edmonton Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC), and meets monthly to provide insight and advice to the City on environmental issues. The EAC represents a community voice in city decision making and is comprised of citizens and local key representatives.

Over the past 4 years the EAC has advised the City on:
- the design of a neighbourhood-oriented action program
- green building policy
- energy transition plan
- renewable energy plan
- The Way We Green, the City's sustainability plan

The Office of Sustainability also represents sustainability issues on behalf of the University when the City is developing new policies, services, and infrastructure. For example, providing recommendations for downtown bike routes in "The Way We Move," the City's transportation plan.

As well, the Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU), has worked with the City of Edmonton municipal government to implement the U-Pass program, which promotes sustainable transportation by providing transit passes to every student at MacEwan University. The program is mandatory and fees are collected along with the students' tuition. Although SAMU, a student-led organization, is responsible for bringing the program to MacEwan University, it would not be possible to implement without the support and advocacy from the institution. MacEwan University is responsible for collecting the transit fees in tuition. The institution also speaks highly of the program and promotes it, thereby making it appealing to current and prospective students, and acts as an advocate with the City of Edmonton for its continuation.
