A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
This data was collected using a survey developed by the Office of Sustainability and Institutional Analysis and Planning. A short survey was chosen to help ensure a good response and foster the completion of future surveys. The survey was also designed to record self-reported commuting patterns instead of the employees’ attitudes towards commuting. This provides information on self-reported actions instead of intentions, which tend to only state what people they think they should do. Since the Office of Sustainability is just starting to plan and implement transportation-related initiatives, it was not possible to ask questions directly related to these initiatives. This will be done in future surveys.
Employees were asked to provide information on the type of transportation they used to get to work, how often they used it and if it changed depending on the season. Employees were also asked to provide the first three digits of their home postal codes. This was used to provide an estimate of the number of kilometers they commuted to and from work.
The questionnaire was administered to employees at MacEwan University in May 2014. All employees with active employment records on April 1, 2014 were invited to participate. Invitation emails were sent to 1,916 employees. A small number of completed surveys were rejected due to issues with the responses (e.g., insufficient information provided about campus or more than seven days per week of travel indicated). There were a total of 1,030 valid responses for a response rate of 54%.
