A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:

Miami University has a goal for all major construction projects to achieve a level of Silver Certification with the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system. One of the methods that Miami employs to achieve this goal on its construction projects is diversion of construction waste from the landfill. The LEED system requires documentation of waste diverted.
Documentation of the information exists in the form of a summary from the waste contractor on the projects. This documentation describes total tonnage collected, amount diverted with breakdown of type of material, and amount landfilled for each waste receptacle collected throughout the project.
Since the STARS point is a percentage of diverted waste to total waste, information from representative sample of 7 projects was used to determine the point.
