A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
MSU's Storm Water Pollution Prevention Initiative (SWPPI)was completed in July 2010. The SWPPI addresses both storm water quantity and quality, and includes a Public Education Plan, Illicit Discharge Elimination Plan, Post Construction Storm Water Controls for areas of new development and redevelopment, Construction Site Storm Water Runoff Control and Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping for Municipal Operations. The plan is currently being implemented by a team of staff members representing several MSU service units and departments. As part of this effort, recently-developed Storm Water Design Standards are being followed for all new development projects.

MSU has installed porous pavement at the Surplus Store & Recycling Center as well as the MSU Police parking lot.

Bio-retention areas have been installed at the Surplus Store & Recycling Center, the Farm Lane Underpass, Landscape Services and Erickson Hall. MSU Faculty members and graduate students are conducting research at the Farm Lane Underpass to assess the efficacy of various plant materials in removing storm water pollutants.

Vegetated swales are in place to treat storm water runoff from the Farm Lane Underpass, the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health and the Demmer Center.

Additional storm water controls on the MSU campus include:
- 11 oil-water separators to treat storm water runoff from parking lots and structures.
- A nutrient-separating baffle box that treats 27 acres of campus. It is designed to collect sediment, organic matter and debris/trash, and treat water for inputs such as hydrocarbons.
- A rainwater collection system at the Surplus Store & Recycling Center, which provides 60 percent of filtered gray water for toilets, urinals and power washers at the facility.
- A program to minimize pollutants entering the storm drainage system, including regular street sweeping, appropriate snow and ice removal pratices and regular catch basin and inlet cleaning.
