Each fall semester MSUM's First Year Programs hold orientation for new students. During Orientation, Student Orientation Counselors (SOCs) assist new students with any needs whether it is information, direction, fun, laughs, or helping you sort through things while at Orientation.

During SOC training, the Sustainability Coordinator holds a session which trains the SOCs how to deliver information about Campus Sustainability Initiatives and green living. The SOCs then provide that outreach information to the students participating in orientation. The goal of the SOC training in sustainability is to foster a culture of sustainability with all of our new students.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

The program builds on the selection of Student Orientation Counselors which is administered by MSUM's department of First Year Programs. The SOCs are selected by First Year Programs based on an application and interview process, and are chosen for possessing skills that assist new students in the transition to university life. All of the SOCs selected by the staff in First Year Programs participated in the training.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

SOCs undergo a multi-day training session in advance of orientation. One of the training sessions educates the SOCs how to approach sustainability during orientation, and are offered tips for green living to share with orientation participants.


A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Fall orientation is sponsored by MSUM's department of First Year Programs. The sustainability training for the SOCs is led by the campus Sustainability Coordinator.

Resident Assistant Training

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):

Each fall Resident Assistants (RAs) participate in multi-day training sessions prior to the arrival of residence hall students. One of the sessions during their training teaches them how to deliver sustainability outreach to the student residents who live on the RA's floor.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

This program builds from the selection of Resident Assistants by MSUM's department of Housing and Residential Life. All RAs participated in the training. Prior to the training, the RA candidates go through a group activity day (6 activities to gauge how they work with other groups) with a short ten minute interview. And from there if they are selected to go through to the second round they then put together a ten minute presentation (on programming) and then another 20 minute interview.

The campus' Sustainability Coordinator hold a formal training session during the multi-day training that RAs receive. They learn how to teach students living on campus about sustainability and offer tips for greener living in the residence halls.

The RA training is sponsored by MSUM's department of Housing, and the Sustainability Training session is sponsored by the Office of Campus Sustainability.
