The Sustainability Advisory Committee lent their support to the Tree Canopy Preservation and Restoration Policy and Enhancement Goals. The Committee joined the Tree City USA Citizen Advisory Committee in offering their formal support in order to help continue the preservation work adopted by the Springfield Public Works and Springfield/Greene County Parks. To date this initiative has preserved 27 acres and restored 18 acres of canopy.

The Mayors Monarch Pledge is a tri-national initiative to encourage mayors and other local government chief executives to take community-wide actions to help save the monarch butterfly. Municipalities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada have pledged their support. Missouri State is supporting Springfield’s commitment. The Student Government Association has pledged their formal support through the passage of a resolution, which will focus on community education. In addition, the university is converting two vacant lots on campus into Monarch habitats.
