Does the institution have a discrimination response protocol or committee (sometimes called a bias response team) to respond to and support those who have experienced or witnessed a bias incident, act of discrimination or hate crime?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s discrimination response protocol or team (including examples of actions taken during the previous three years):

The office of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (IEDI) handles all reports of discrimination under any protected class. There are many different ways that a report may be submitted to our office (i.e., online, in person, mail, e-mail, phone, mandated reporters). Once the Office of IEDI receives a report, the University Investigator immediately begins an investigation to see if a policy violation has occurred. For more information on our Equity Resolution Process, please visit: https://www.umsystem.edu/ums/dei/titleix/erp
For the reporting period of February 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016, there were 109 reports received by the Office of IEDI. After the initial investigation, it was determined that only 95 of those reports were discrimination reports with possible policy violations under our jurisdiction. Of those 95 reports, approximately 112 policy violations were identified such as, age, disability, genetic information, race, ancestry, gender expression, national origin, religion, color, gender identity, protected veteran status, retaliation, and sex based discrimination or assault. Parties involved in a report are offered numerous resources on and off campus, as well as interim remedies and accommodations based on their specific needs and preferences. During the previously mentioned reporting period, 39 accommodations were provided. Accommodations offered include housing reassignment, no contact and/or trespassing directives, police escorts, transportation, counseling services, work or academic accommodations, off campus resources, etc.

Counseling, Disability Support, and Student Wellnes (CDSW) provides counseling, Disability accommodations, programming, and case management services for all students, including underrepresented groups. Peer support is an aspect of group counseling, which is available to students. We address mental health issues (depression, anxiety, motivation, uncertainty about career direction, etc.) and provide support in dealing with life circumstances (illness, family emergencies, etc.) that would interfere with academic success. Beyond offering a Test Anxiety series, we don’t provide academic support; the Student Success Center addresses academic support more directly. Students who volunteer as a student peer health educator in our Joe’s PEER organization receive training and supervision, which might be considered mentoring.
