The Sustainability Office led by the Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC), developed the Mohawk College Environmental Management Plan, which is the leading policy document for achieving sustainability at Mohawk.

EMP 1.0: 2012 Results
Energy Management: 24% reduction in carbon emissions by 2012

Mohawk has been awarded 7 Local, Regional, and National awards for achievements in sustainability since the implementation of EMP 1.0

Green Building: 2 LEED Gold Certified Buildings

Transportation: The Sustainability Office contributions to alternate modes of transportation has led to:
-Over 1050+ staff discounted transit passes sold between 2012-2014
-Universal Transit Pass offered to all Full-time fee paying students
-Now offer 2 car share vehicles on campus through studentcarshare.ca
-200+ designated parking spaces for alternative transportation options on campus
- Secured Bike Storage Facility
Mohawk College has seen 850,000 km/yr if single-occupant vehicle travel prevented though alternative transportation programs, despite a growing campus population.

Food Services:
- Over 50+ community, staff and students participated during the launch year of the community garden.
- Over 2600 lbs of fresh produce was purchased during the 8 month pilot of the good food box program by students, staff & faculty.
- The development of the Fennell Orcard is to showcase and grow fruit trees native to the region. The Orchard provides students and community members an opportunity to connect with local food production and compliments other on-campus initiatives such as the Community Garden.

Water Management:
Mohawk College issued a ban on the sale of single use plastics, this included plastic bags and single use plastic water bottles. To help boost this ban’s efforts, over 30 refillable water stations have been installed across all campuses.

Waste Management:
-The Sustainability Office and Greentec offers on-campus electronic waste disposal stations that provide students, staff and faculty the opportunity to recycle personal electronic waste.

-The Sustainability Office has teamed up with Raw Materials Company Inc. (RMC) to re-launch the on-campus battery recycling program. All staff, students, and faculty are encouraged to bring their used batteries to any of the specified locations and we ensure they are recycled properly.

-The Sustainability Office and the Digital Print and Learning Centre at Fennell Campus have brought a fresh-new look to the four-stream waste bins across Fennell Campus. The updated signage helps better educate users on where their waste goes with the new What Goes Where signage above bins, and the impact waste diversion has had at Mohawk.

In 2010, the Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) was formed. The mandate of this Committee is to define the direction and objectives for both the Sustainability Office. Membership of the SSC was comprised of representatives from all areas across the College, including the Mohawk Students Association. The SSC developed a governance model that provides a clear reporting structure for maintaining accountability in all levels of Mohawk’s commitment to sustainability.

The Manager of the Sustainability Office oversees the implementation of all Sustainability Initiatives at the College. The Manager is responsible for the staff and projects of the Sustainability Office including; completion of sustainability focused projects on campus, as well as the proposal of new sustainability projects.
