Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Innoventure Competition to Upcycle Trash into Treasure

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

NMSU College of Business hosts the Innoventure Competition where students in the community upcycled trash into treasure. The name of the competition says it all - Innovation! The students began working on their projects in the fall 2015 with a $50 budget and a directive to solve everyday problems using science, technology, engineering and math to upcycle products that would normally be thrown away and turn them into a marketable product.

Middle- and high-school students from across New Mexico showed what they'd learned about “upcycling” at the 12th annual "Innoventure" student competition, hosted by NMSU Arrowhead Center at the Corbett Center Student Union on the New Mexico State University campus. The competition's "upcycling" theme is not “recycling” in the strict sense of the word, as students are not using heat or chemical technology to break down the products. The upcycling process gives the students the opportunity to create something new out of what is usually considered trash and develop a market for it.
