A brief description of the farmers’ market:
NYU hosts the Washington Square CSA.
CSAs are direct-relationship enterprises between a farmer and a membership body of consumers who invest pre-season in a year of produce (or other farm products) and share the risks and rewards of a season's bounty.

NYU does not host its own independent farmer's market -- at least not as that term is usually used.
Given the wealth of immediately-available non-profit and private ways to access local, seasonal, organic and fresh produce, meats and value-added food on campus. There are 5 NYC Greenmarkets within half a mile of NYU's urban campus, and these serve one element of our community's need for a local, sustainable food system very well. We also have two organic food co-ops, several organic grocery stores, and other enterprises bringing access to sustainable food at NYU.
The reason NYU is claiming this credit is because we do host a local, organic food enterprise which is less common in universities, but actually represents a greater commitment than hosting a farmer's market -- a Community Supported Agriculture program called the Washington Square CSA, run out of our Food Studies Department. We believe this fulfills the intent of the credit.
