307.11 Metric tons

A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate, including efforts made during the previous three years:

Niagara College has implemented many programs to increase the diversion rate. These programs include new waste hauler contracts, an expanded composting program; new four stream waste receptacles that include signs depicting what can and cannot be placed in the landfill waste stream, co-mingled plastics stream, paper stream, and organics stream. Sustainability Ambassadors also assist students and employees during Orientation Week at the beginning of each semester, and large events as to what bin particular waste items can be placed in.

A brief description of any food donation programs employed by the institution:

The Niagara College Canadian Food and Wine Institute donates all leftover food where possible. With more charities not allowing leftover food from vendors in Ontario it is becoming increasingly difficult to find charities to take the food. All leftover food that cannot be donated to charities is provided to students to take home; there is no prepared food waste coming out of this facility.

All dining services at Niagara College are required to utilize a pre-consumer food waste composting program within the food preparation area of the dining service areas including Benchmark, Bench-to-Go and cafeteria services at Niagara College. All pre-consumer organic scraps are placed in a composting bin provided by Niagara College. These practices are extended to catering services as well as daily meal preparations.

A brief description of any post-consumer food waste composting program employed by the institution:

Dining Services at Niagara College has a post-consumer food waste composting program throughout the college including Benchmark, Bench-to-Go and cafeteria services at Niagara College. All bins supporting post-consumer organic composting have clear signage indicating what can be composted.
