Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Niagara College has completed a full hazardous waste audit to identify all areas of the college which produce hazardous waste. The Environmental Health and Safety Department acts as the central point of contact for all hazardous waste information on site. Each department that produces hazardous waste is required to conduct an annual inventory of hazardous waste materials stored on site and update it in the Material Safety Data Sheet Tracking software. This also allows the Environmental Health and Safety Department to monitor hazardous materials used and stored on site. During the annual inventory analysis, each department is encouraged to dispose of hazardous materials that are no longer required and only re-purchase what is necessary. Also, all Niagara College staff are required to conduct WHMIS course completion annually to ensure training is up to date.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

The Environmental Health and Safety Department in partnership with the Facilities Management Services Department, ensures that hazardous waste is handled, stored and disposed of in a proper, environmentally friendly manner. The Environmental Health and Safety Manager arranges all hazardous waste pick-up and disposal with a reputable hazardous waste hauler who is qualified to dispose of all hazardous waste materials that Niagara College generates. All handling, storage, and document management related to hazardous materials is in compliance with Ministry of the Environment regulations.

A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:

A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:

No programs to report

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish all electronic waste generated by the institution?:
Yes

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by students?:
Yes

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program(s):

All electronic waste generated by Niagara College is disposed of in a central location at each campus. All employees can request for obsolete electronic waste to be picked up by facilities or IT staff which can be placed in the central location for disposal.

A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

Niagara College has a contract with a local electronic waste hauler that is approved by the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES). The OES is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the responsible reuse and recycle of waste electronics through a program that includes 600 collection sites and multiple other affiliate sites across Ontario. Their approval verifies that the electronic waste is taken to a facility that will properly dismantle all electronic components to ensure environmental standards are met as well as workers basic safety.
