A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
Both the college Sustainability Office and the Community College District Office offer opportunities for students to engage in either work-study or stipended and credited undergraduate research in data collection and analysis for the STARS assessment, as well as in developing recommendations for priority sustainability actions to be taken in light of findings resulting from the STARS assessment.
The Sustainability Office also works directly with staff to guide research topics that intersect with the sustainability plan for the college. One example of this is the student led research that resulted in a stormwater waiver for the community college.

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:
The Sustainability Office informally encourages faculty to research sustainability related topics, however research isn't considered when promoting a faculty member or getting them on a tenure track. We can however offer financial incentives from our Sustainability Fund for instructors and their students to pursue sustainability initiatives as part of their coursework.
Additionally, this year, the Seattle Community College District hosted a sustainability workshop in coordination with Engineering and Systems Management giant CH2MHill, which was open to all staff and faculty, and taught concepts of sustainability that can be incorporated into course curricula, and ways that faculty can continue to expand their use of sustainability concepts in the classroom.
